Dear Reader,
I’m happy to finally premiere the first video in my Hungarian Baking Series, filmed during my recent trip to Budapest!
This episode features Hungary’s most iconic cake: Dobostorta.

Made with six layers of delicate sponge cake, filled with rich chocolate French buttercream, and topped with a crisp caramel layer, it was created in late-19th-century Budapest and quickly became famous across the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

In this video, explore the history of the cake with me on location in Budapest before we return to my kitchen to make it together.
And thank you for your patience during the quiet stretch here (videos, emails, and social posts!). It’s been quite a winter — illnesses, snow days, February vacation, and then the Blizzard of ’26 keeping the kids home for another full week.
But I’m finally back in motion (stay away, snowstorms!), and I’m excited to share the rest of the Hungarian baking series with you over the coming weeks — with an Austrian series to follow.
If you’d like a companion to this series, my Homestyle Hungarian Bakes e-book shares a collection of traditional Hungarian recipes that are simple, comforting, and easy for the home baker.

Until next time, happy baking!
Kristin
